New Era in New Bern: James Lynch Takes the Helm as Southpaws Owner

A new chapter has begun for the New Bern Southpaws. James Lynch, a data analytics veteran and lifelong baseball enthusiast, has officially taken ownership of the team, bringing with him a deep passion for the game and a strong vision for growth, on and off the field.

The Road to Ownership: James' Story
Lynch’s journey into team ownership began with a moment of whimsy. “I was laid off in the spring,” he explained, “and while waiting for my daughter’s softball practice to end, my nine-year-old said, ‘You should start your own company... unless you can buy a baseball team.’” What started as a joke turned into a serious pursuit. Within days, Lynch was speaking with a broker and forming an ownership group dedicated to the idea of building something special.

Why New Bern?
When evaluating opportunities, Lynch looked for a baseball-minded community within driving distance, with strong potential for fan engagement and a focus on player development. New Bern checked every box. “It was the clear choice,” Lynch said. “We’re already working with city and community leaders to make sure we enhance the experience of living in New Bern.”

Immediate Plans & Long-Term Vision
Lynch’s group has bold plans, including community partnership events, deeper local engagement, and potential stadium enhancements at historic Kafer Park. “We’re hoping to set roots and inspire the next generation of baseball lovers,” he added.

Staying the Course with Dave
A key piece of the puzzle: keeping General Manager Dave on board. “We’ve been talking with Dave for months,” said Lynch. “He has deep roots in the community. Everywhere we go, people know and respect him.”

Dave echoed the enthusiasm. “I’m excited by the energy James and his team are bringing. Their vision aligns perfectly with what we’ve been building. We’re talking about enhancing the fan experience, player development, and becoming a true summer destination for locals and visitors.”

Culture and Community First
Heading into the team’s third season, both James and Dave emphasize a culture built on opportunity, growth, and community pride. “We want to recruit top talent locally and nationally, create an amazing fan experience, and strengthen our partnerships with businesses and nonprofits,” Dave said.

Looking Ahead
The ownership may be new, but the Southpaws’ commitment remains the same—providing a high-quality summer baseball experience and serving as a staple in the New Bern community. As Lynch put it, “We can’t wait to grow with the families here. We’re just getting started.”
